WHMIS Symbols
Below are hazard symbols for WHMIS 1988. Hazard symbols for WHMIS 2015 Symbols are in general similar to those of WHMIS 1988.WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) is Canada's national hazard communication standard. The key elements of WHMIS are:
- cautionary labelling of containers of WHMIS "controlled products"
- provision of material safety data sheets (MSDSs)
- worker education and training programs .
WHMIS provides information on the safe use, storage, handling and disposal of hazardous materials at Canadian workplaces.
WHMIS Hazard Symbols
There are 8 WHMIS hazard materials symbols representing the 8 classes of hazardous materials. The 8 classes are:
CLASS A Compressed Gas

CLASS B Flammable and Combustible Material

CLASS C Oxidizing Materials

CLASS D-1 Poisonous and Infectious Material (material causing immediate and serious effects)

CLASS D-2 Poisonous and Infectious Material (material causing other toxic effects).This symbol is retired in the new WHMIS 2015 system

CLASS D-3 Poisonous and Infectious Material (Biohazardous Infectious Material)

CLASS E Corrosive Material

CLASS F Dangerously Reactive Material. This symbol is also retired in the new WHMIS 2015 system.
